Happy Sunday
Today is D&D and then maybe Wonder Woman. Or taking a nap. Napping is good, too.

Hey, I'm still alive.
Don't mind me. I'm just testing this whole LJ-crosspost thing. Also, hello!

Halp halp!
I have no idea how to do this, but I want to make it so I can share things I post elsewhere more easily here. For lack of a 'share on livejournal' button, er, *anywhere* on the Internet, I'd like to mock up something here. It'll make me much more active since I won't make a post on FB or somewhere then be like: eh, I've said my piece.

I've looked at the RSS feed thing and couldn't make heads nor tails of it. Some days my comprehension is scrambled. Yay meds + cognitive impairment.

Not a rad story, but...
Just a quick heads up for where I'm at now. We're still at the duplex we moved into a few years ago. The horrible neighbor is gone. The neighbor we have now is noisy too, but it's annoying rather than life-alteringly horrible, and she is at least responsive when you tell her enough is enough. Medically, I'm in a place where I can filter out the little stuff that would drive me nuts, so it's only the big stuff that needs addressed, and that's the kind of stuff anyone would be annoyed by. Having a housemate (we have a housemate!) has helped in that regard, because my beloved is a wonderful human being who also happens to be astonishingly clueless. He doesn't see stuff. He doesn't hear stuff. Unless you dump it on his lap and yell OH MY GOD IT'S ALIVE he might not notice it exists at all. Having someone else in the house saying yeah this is too much, that's nice. Good for the ol' sanity.

Anyway...Collapse )

Okay, so.
I am still alive. Just had to take a couple years off to lose my mind, spend some time in treatment, and come out the other side. Like you do. For awhile, I've only had the spoons to be one place, and Facebook has my family. I feel well enough to spread out again, so there's that.

I'll have stories later. Awesome stories. Stories you only get when you've had the past couple years I have.

Ella's surgery bills
Originally posted by issendai. Reposted by karjack at 2012-07-22 04:13:00.

Update on 9/5: Six weeks after her accident, Ella is now wandering the house and leaping up on beds and bunks and other things that need cat hair on them. She has a limp, which is probably permanent, but she's not letting that stop her. Read the full update here.

Update on 8/1: Ella is doing well! Anne got a second opinion from a surgeon, who said this type of pelvic fracture would heal better without surgery than with surgery. Ella's leg has moved back into the correct alignment, and she's getting feeling back in the leg. Anne is keeping Ella confined to a large dog crate during the day to prevent her from leaping or running and worsening the fracture. It will take four to six weeks for Ella to heal, and she'll need several more vet visits, but if things keep going as they have been, she won't need surgery.

I'll be posting Anne's updates later today. For now, you can read them directly on her Facebook.

The amazing outpouring of support you all have shown Ella enabled Anne to get a second opinion that she otherwise wouldn't have been able to get. She says, "I don't have to go with 'if it was my cat I wouldn't bother.'" It's also covering vet visits, painkillers, and all the other things that an extended injury brings. Anne isn't going to make a final reckoning until Ella is well and truly out of the woods, but right now, it looks like your donations will more than cover the rest of Ella's care.

Thank you all so much. Your generosity on behalf of Miss Ella is wondrous and staggering. As a personal friend of the little grey lady, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

This is Ella.
Ella in the fullness of her dignity

On Thursday night, Ella came home dragging herself by her forelegs. Anne rushed her to the emergency animal hospital. This is Ella's pelvis...
Ella's pelvis

...which is not supposed to look like that.

It will cost $1500 to $4500 to get medical care for Ella's broken pelvis--$1500 to amputate her leg, $4500 to pin the bone and save her leg. Anne just got hit with a ton of bills and doesn't have enough to cover either operation. Please, donate whatever you can to help save Ella's leg. (Or send a check if you don't want to use Wepay. Message me for the name and address.) Every little bit helps.

And if you can't donate, please repost. Friends-of-friends have already been a huge help.

Donations are now more than enough to cover Ella's medical expenses. Thank you all so, so much.

If you want to link to or repost this from any other platform, please do. Thank you to those of you who are getting the word out, and many, many thanks to those who have donated.

Send questions about donations to morgansong, who's handling the fundraising for Anne. She can no longer accept Paypal donations because Paypal is having issues. Crisis averted.

Updates on Ella's condition and photos are in the comments: Sunday evening, Tuesday morning, and Tuesday evening. She's hanging in there. Brave little kitty. We've raised $1,548 $2,178 so far*--and by "us," I mean all of us, those who've donated and those who've spread the word. Thank you all so, so much. The kindness of strangers has been wonderful. The Internet has made the world a smaller place, and sometimes, it's a smaller, better place.

Kittens
My neighbor has a pair of kittens that desperately need a home. They're a brother and sister pair, about five months old, give or take, black and white domestic shorthairs. They're very affectionate and they do not want to be outside! They're also not very car smart and I worry they're going to get squished.

The neighbor is trying to rehome them, and I'm trying to help because their miserable and desperate cries are breaking my heart, but we can't afford more cats. If you live in the Eugene/Springfield area or are willing to travel there to pick them up, please let me know ASAP. They are matched set, alas, and will be very unhappy if they're separated.

Please spread the word. I really worry about these little guys being outside on a cul de sac where people are coming and going all the time.

Message me or email me if you can help me out with this. They're very sweet. The reason they're outside and need to be rehomed is unexpected allergies. It's nothing they did.

Stuff and Things
I want to thank neo_prodigy for writing an awesome guest post for my LJ today. Congratulations on Hollowstone. You rock.

il_volpe had a great suggestion: put in a request at your library to purchase Hollowstone. In il_volpe's words: Shelf-space on a library's NEW BOOKs racks is like radio-play for authors.

More as it develops!

Profound Media Lessons Learned By An Impressionable Mind

Like most children of the 80s, He-Man was not simply a cartoon but a way of life. From him I learned morals and values—such as telling the truth, taking responsibility, bigotry is wrong, respect the environment—and what it truly meant to be a Master Of The Universe.

From He-Man's relationship with his twin sister She-Ra (most notably how they always worked together as a team and the writers portrayed them as equals), I learned that girls are just as awesome as boys and can easily kick just as much butt.

A fact further reinforced by characters such as Teela, Scarlett (GI Joe), Batgirl, Jem and Wonder Woman. Those characters, along with the likes of Xena, Buffy, Zoe Washburne, Veronica Mars and others definitely planted seeds that made me open to learning about women's issues and how I can do better as a man in aiding them.

Little known fact. When my Mom was pregnant, I actually wanted a sister because I wanted the pair of us to go kick butt and save the world just like He-Man & She-Ra. And even at 5-years-old, I campaigned (albeit unsuccessfully) for my sister to be named Diana because as her big brother, I was going to make sure she was going to be both a princess and a wonder woman.

From Superman, I learned to be a mild mannered young man and what it meant to be a champion when the need arose. Maybe not leaping tall buildings, but helping others and trying to be a good person.

From Snake Eyes (G.I. Joe), I learned that knowing was half the battle. That and the coolest guys in the room is the one who knows to keep his mouth shut because actions speak louder than words. And it's true, it's always the quiet ones.

Like most children of the 80s, Hulkamania was running wild, and as a full-fledged Hulkamaniac, I learned about training hard, saying your prayers, eating your vitamins and believing in yourself.

From Zorro, I learned what it meant to have a sense of pride in one's people and to fight against a corrupt and oppressive government.

While I'll be the first to admit he's an acquired taste, one thing I can say about Steve Urkel is that in addition to proving that blacks can be intelligent. He taught me what it truly meant to love one's self. And no matter how much the world may hate you for being unique, as long as you have that, they can never hinder your progress.

From Michael Jackson, I learned how to sing and dance but to overcome scars of child abuse and pain to take over the world and inspire millions.

BraveStarr was one of the first time I saw Native Americans depicted as something other than a savage. His heroism was one of the catalysts that inspired me to learn more about my Cherokee ancestry.

Life Goes On introduced the world to Charles Thatcher while Reasonable Doubts introduced the world to Tess Kaufman. Both characters taught that people with disabilities are human beings and are entitled to the same rights and dignities that many of us take for granted.

The Vanishing Son was one of the first times I saw a non-white male character in a sexy leading role. As a fellow person of color, I could relate to the struggles and bigotry said lead character endured. It also taught me, that as a non-white male, I don't have to be the token or black best friend. I could actually take the lead and be the alpha.

The Famous Jett Jackson was one of the first times I ever watched a show where a black teen like myself at the time was handled with the same care and respect that's usually reserved for white characters. Like Vanishing Son, it taught me that I don't have to be relegated to the sidekick but I could be the leader.

When used responsibly, media can change lives and save them.

Willow and Tara, from Buffy and Xena and Gabrielle helped me realize that love has no boundaries and being attracted to someone of the same gender is not horrible or an abomination.

As I began to come to terms with my orientation in college, Danny from the Real World: New Orleans was one of the first gay men I admired and looked up to as a role model. Cute, kind, intelligent, down to earth. He debunked virtually every bigoted notion society tries to qualify for queer men. He was proof that gay and awesome weren't mutually exclusive.

However it was Queer As Folk that probably gave me the strength to refrain from taking my own life when I came out. It was through this series that I learned that God doesn't make mistakes. I'm made in his image. And I deserved to be loved, just like everyone else does. It was through characters like Brian Kinney and Ben Bruckner that I learned to defy convention and to be the best man I know how to be. No excuses, no apologies, no regrets.

For all of the flaws of "reality television," Alexis Arquette's appearance on the Surreal Life was an educational and all too sobering reminder of the bigotry and violence that trans people face in their day to day. And despite the hardships and the dangers, my trans peeps are still holding it down like WHOA!!!!

Static Shock put a shock to my system with not only a black superhero but a gay one in his best friend and crime fighting partner, Gear.

Merlin has shown the world that black women can be queens.

The beautiful brilliant Doctor Martha Jones proved time and time again that she was the equal of any time lord.

Captain Jack Harkness is a proof that a queer man can be an action hero and a bonafied badass.

It was Reginald Hudlin's run on Black Panther that gave me and other black folks an escape to the world of Wakanda, which is our Camelot. Where being black is not a scarlet letter but a badge of honor. One made of vibranium.

Speaking of badasses, you know you're one when you're a dark anti hero (who happens to be an unapologetic gay man) who is not only one of the most powerful characters but comics but is so hardcore he can justifiably call Wolverine, Deadpool, Sabretooth, Punisher and Batman a bunch of punks. Midnighter is proof that masculinity and strength is not limited to cis straight men.

As much as I strive to emulate Bruce Wayne's inhuman indomitable drive, it's epic win that is in fact Cassandra Cain, a woman of color, more than Dick Grayson, more than Jason Todd, more than Tim Drake, more than Terry McGillis, who has proven time and time again that she's Bruce 2.0 and the true heir apparent to the bat mantle.

It was Storm who made me proud to be of nubian descent. Regal, intelligent, beautiful, a leader of the superhero team of a comic book company's flagship title. She taught me, that I am in fact the descendant of greatness and that my power is limitless.

When it comes to bigotry: racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. it ultimately stems back to human nature: to fear, hate hurt harm that which is different from us.

So how do we end bigotry and institutional oppression?

The answer for me came last week in the form of a movie entitled That's What I Am.

In the film, Ed Harris's character wrote the answer in four simple words.

Human Dignity + Compassion = Peace.

Seems simple, though for many of us, the execution is easier said than done. But imagine what would happen if each of us remembered that.

Don't think the media has a direct effect on the world, look no further than the 2008 presidential elections.

Dennis Hasbert, a black man, played President David Palmer on the hit series, 24. Geena Davis starred as the first female president on Commander In Chief. It's been postulated that because of said portrayals, America became entertained the notions of a black and female presidents, whether it was Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

So why does media matter? Because there is power in perception. Especially the perception of marginalized people. And perception influences laws and policy: Jim Crowe, women's suffrage, DADT.

Minorities in media matter because it reminds the world that we're entitled to human dignity and compassion just like everyone else.

And you'd be surprised what one can absorb through the media. I know I was.

Food for the mind and soul.
Watch this space. On the 31st, I'll be hosting a guest post by none other than the imminently awesome neo_prodigy. He's going to talk about his novel Hollowstone, which will be out on June 17th!

If you're looking for fiction that's inclusive of folks who traditionally get a short shrift in literature (LGBT, people of color) you'll want to keep an eye out for this one. Here is an author with a lot of passion, intelligence, and talent. I'm definitely looking forward to this novel.

[Recipe] Corn and Black Bean Medley
I'm not sure what a medley is, to tell you the truth. It seems like something I'd call a salad if it were served cold. So if you serve this cold (and you totally could) I guess it would be a Corn and Black Bean Salad.

I seem to be doing a lot of 'oh crap I need to make a thing right now' recipes. That's because lately I've been so flaky and out of it I'm already halfway through dinner before I realize I need another thing. So, yeah, going with canned stuff I had in the pantry. Do feel free to substitute with fresh ingredients.

Oh no! We needed an emergency side! Then this happened.Collapse )

Had a day.
pjack and I went to North Bank, then saw Thor, then walked all over the mall. Cute clothes were acquired. Maybe next week I'll get my hair done. The weather is getting to a point where short hair would be advantageous. My legs have informed me we're done for the night, so taking it easy commences now.

Yeah, I'll have an opinion of the movie at some point. I'm still struck blind by the abs of deliciousness.

[Recipe] Missing Time Vegan Chili
I occasionally miss chunks of time. As in I was doing something and then ten minutes later I'm somewhere else doing another thing and I honestly am not entirely sure how I got from Point A to Point B. The weird thing is I'll remember details, sometimes rather specific ones. I won't remember having done them, just that they were done.

Today I went to the kitchen to make myself a sandwich and half an hour later I had vegan chili.

So. I guess tonight was chili night. Also, a lot of these ingredients are from a can because apparently my subconscious cares not for freshness and long prep times.

First you'll need about twenty minutes you can't account for...Collapse )
